Evaluation of soil erosion in the Lake Patzcuaro basin using the universal soil loss equation
Main Article Content
Abstract
The quantification of water erosion of soils in watersheds is useful to know the degree of soil deterioration and to implement conservation measures to minimize soil loss. Given the lack of information to accurately quantify erosion in Mexico, it is necessary to study its estimation with available information using methodologies validated with experimental information. The main objective of this study is to quantify the magnitude of water erosion in the Lake Patzcuaro basin and identify critical areas by applying the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE). The implementation of the USLE has made it possible to identify areas vulnerable to erosion and to focus conservation efforts on critical sectors. It also provides a scientific basis for informed decision-making in terms of territorial planning, promotion of sustainable agricultural practices and protection of the lake's water resources. The results obtained will be used to design management and conservation strategies, thus contributing to the environmental sustainability of the watershed.
