Abstract

The “Cerro del Aguila”, was recently decreed as a State Reserve within the municipality of Morelia and Lagunillas, Michoacán. For the technical study (march 2023), 58 species of birds were reported. In this study, we report for the first time a total of 182 species, of which 72.6% are permanent residents and 27.4% are migratory. 21% of the species present endemism; six are at risk according to the NOM-089 and three are exotic. We conclude that “Cerro del Aguila” represents a very important refuge for the conservation of the avifauna of the municipality of Morelia. We recommend that future conservation initiatives consider creating biological corridors to connect with neighboring protected areas.

Javier Salgado Ortiz, Facultad de Biología

Graduated from the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo where I received the
Biologist Degree in 1993 with the thesis: "Use of patches of secondary vegetation in rangeland
areas by a community of birds in the Lacandona forest, Chiapas", with honorific mention.
Subsequently, I completed Master's and PhD studies at Queen's University, Canada, between 1998
-2005 where I worked on issues related to determining the effects of biotic (food and predation)
and abiotic (climate) factors on the reproductive success of birds and wildlife, as well as
on the effects of habitat disturbance (fragmentation) on the distribution, abundance and
reproductive success of birds. My main interest is in aspects of population and community ecology,
working mainly with birds on issues of reproductive biology, synecology and conservation.
Extensive experience working on various research projects both nationally and internationally.
On the other hand, part of my research is focused on aspects of wildlife management and
conservation, particularly learning about the impact of anthropized environments such as
agroecosystems and other disturbed environments used by birds. Currently assigned as Titular
Research Professor "category B" at the Ornithology Laboratory of the Faculty of Biology located
at B4 building.

Brenda Elizabeth Arteaga Salgado, Facultad de Biología

Brenda Elizabeth Arteaga Salgado is a former undergrad student of the Biology Faculty, where she obtained her Bachellors in Biology. Brenda assisted with bird surveys and organizing data bases for the study.

José Fernando Villaseñor Gómez, Faultad de Biología. UMSNH

Dr. José Fernando Villaseñor Gómez is a researcher at Ornithology Research Laboratory,
affiliated to the Faculty of Biology at Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo
(UMSNH).He has a research trajectory of more than 30 years in the area of ornithology,
particularly in aspects of ecology and conservation of birds and their habitats.
With 35 years of service at UMSNH, he has supervised a significant number of undergraduate
and graduate students theses and trained many students in both undergraduate and postgraduate
courses in Biology. He is one of the most recognized ornithologists, both in Mexico and internationally.
