Abstract

Epigenetics studies changes in the expression of genes without modifications in the DNA sequences. Therefore, it relates the environmental and genetic influences that determine a certain phenotype, which is related to the occurrence of diseases. Cancer is a disease associated with uncontrolled cell division and determined by genetic and environmental factors. Epigenetic therapie can modify the alterations suffered by DNA and reduce or interrupt the development of cancer. In this review, the concepts of epigenetics and cancer will be discussed, as well as the relationship of epigenetics with cancer and epigenetic therapies that are currently under study as therapeutic treatment, being one of the best therapeutic alternatives in the near future.
