This paper evaluates re-engineering alternatives for a wastewater treatment plant in a residential complex, in Morelia, Michoacan, to optimize the treatment process and to ensure compliance with the NOM-001-SEMARNAT-2021 standard. It is proposed to include pretreatment and primary treatment, as well as eliminating the original secondary treatment, based on a physicochemical process, and to replace it with a secondary biological process, as a technically, economically, and environmentally viable option. The approach is based on the adaptation and utilization of existing infrastructure and ensuring the sustainability. In addition to improving the quality of wastewater treated, the environmental impact is reduced. These actions would contribute to social well-being by promoting a healthier environment and strengthening the better operation of small-scale treatment plants in urban settings.
